Lila ran down the hallway calling Veronica’s name knowing she had to help find the woman. Had Veronica been abducted from the wheelchair? Lila ran back to the reception area.

A flash of color on the far side of the counter caught her eye. Emma lay on the carpet facedown. Lila checked for a pulse. Emma was alive but unconscious.

“Nurse, please. Someone, help me.” There had to be some medical staff in this hospital. Where had that guy in the smock gone who they had given the dog to?

She heard tapping sounds and then Georgie appeared at the other end of the counter. The dog sat down and stared at her. A realization sunk in. The man in the medical garb they had encountered was the man who was after Veronica. She scooped up Georgie and ran back toward the room the man had come out of. A nurse came down the hallway, registering surprise at the dog in Lila’s arms.

Lila pointed toward reception. “Emma has been hurt. She needs help.”

The nurse rushed toward the hospital entrance.

The side door burst open. Stewart was talking on his phone. “Yes, the black truck with the broken headlight. I need a deputy over here ASAP.”

Lila entered the room where the man had emerged from when they’d first seen him, terrified of what she might find. Georgie let out a bark.

“Is that my baby?” Veronica’s voice sounded weak.

Lila stepped toward the bathroom door. She heard the bolt twist and the door opened. Mrs. Inman reached for Georgie, and tears streamed down her face.

“What happened?”

“A man dressed like a nurse tried to drag me out of the hospital.” Veronica spoke while the dog licked her face and trembled with joy. “I got away and locked myself in the bathroom. He must have heard you guys coming.”

Stewart stepped into the room. “His truck is still in the parking lot. That means he’s on foot. I’ve got deputies coming to help with the search. They’re bringing a boot to disable the truck so the man doesn’t try to double back and escape in it. I need to watch the truck and meet Deputy Swain out there.” Stewart turned sideways. “All three of us can identify him now.”

Once Stewart left the room, Veronica’s mood shifted. She glanced nervously at Lila.

“I only saw him for a few seconds,” Veronica said. “He wasn’t anybody I knew.”

Lila had to admit that she was paying more attention to the uniform than the face. She could remember his basic features and build. She hadn’t recognized him either.

“Did he say anything to you?”

Veronica drew the dog close to her chest and nuzzled her face in his fur. She was shaking and the tightness in her features communicated that she was upset.

Veronica seemed like a fragile person. They needed her calm if they wanted her to answer their questions.

“Georgie can’t stay in the hospital.”

“I know.”

Lila held out her hands. “I can watch him until you’re released. Unless you have someone else in mind.” The dog clearly meant a great deal to Veronica.
